Marlborough gets kudos the world over for its Sauvignon Blanc, great value, well-made wines, and its “clean green” image. It’s also at the forefront of bottling innovation. But its Rieslings? They’re still under the radar in some quarters.
About the Winemaker...
English transplant “Doc” Andrew Hedley’s passion for Riesling probably started on childhood trips with his father to Austria and the great vineyards of the Mosel. As he puts it, Riesling “gets under your skin and never goes away." That combined with his chemistry degree show through his winemaking.
Called “New Zealand’s Master of Riesling” (Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak), Hedley’s eclectic style: mixing machine harvesting with hand picking, whole clusters and de-stemmed fruit, and relying mostly on wild ferments rather than commercial yeast strains results in wines that are hard to pigeonhole.
Some winning accolades....
“Best of Show” San Francisco International Wine Competition and Gold medal winner at the 2015 TEXSOM International Wine Awards
